The League of Women Voters of the Red River Valley continues its First Friday series on Friday, November 7 with Amy Jacobson, Executive Director of Prairie Action ND. Ms. Jacobson will be speaking on Amplifying Voices; Advancing Justice; Building North Dakota. Her talk will focus on the work of Prairie Action as well as the impact of federal funding cuts and programs that have been eliminated, due to the Big, Beautiful Bill. With the government shut down now at the thirtieth day and SNAP benefits due to be eliminated on November 1, Ms. Jacobson’s topic, and expertise will be most timely and invaluable for attendees at the upcoming LWV meeting.
Ms. Jacobson’s entire career has centered on advocating for women and families in the state of North Dakota. In a pivotal role as the first staff person for Planned Parenthood in North Dakota, Amy worked for 15 years as an advocate, strategist, and lobbyist for sexual and reproductive health and rights and human rights in her role as ND state director. She served for 13 years on the board of the North Dakota Women’s Network, the only statewide advocacy organization for women and girls, where she chaired its State Legislative Committee and co-created “WE Rise: Women Empowered”, North Dakota’s first women’s lobby day at the Capitol.
Ms. Jacobson has been the Executive Director of Prairie Action ND since April of 2020. A North Dakota native, Amy received her BA in Women and Gender Studies from North Dakota State University, where she was recognized as Distinguished Alumni in 2015. She has also been honored with the YWCA of Cass Clay “Woman of the Year” award for her work advocating for ND women and families.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan; grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels. The Red River Valley League of Women Voters is one of only two in the country that spans membership from two states, with members hailing from Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead as well as the greater metro area. The theme for this year’s First Fridays series in Protecting Democracy.
