Letter: We ask that you stand by our targeted neighbors

Recent remarks by Fargo District 46 Rep. Desiree Morton regarding the proposed ward system have clarified something important: the belief that certain residents, particularly immigrants who are Somali or Muslim, should be viewed as politically suspicious and less entitled to participate in their own government.

Morton referred to immigrants as “imports who do not support our way of life” and questioned why conservatives would allow Somalis in their campaigns and described Islam as “not a religion; its an ideology” built on “invasion.”

Does this not deserve scrutiny? No community should be treated as suspect because of ethnicity or faith.

Collective blame is not evidence and “assimilation” is not a citizenship requirement. Obeying the law is required. Surrendering one’s identity, culture, or faith to satisfy another person’s definition of American is not. The Constitution bars religious tests and protects religious exercise, regardless of faith.

Muslims who vote, organize, critique government, and seek public office are not abusing American freedom. They are exercising it.

Representation is not invasion. Islam is not a disqualification. Immigration is not evidence of fraud. Hate and prejudice do not become patriotic behind a lectern.

Fargo, what kind of community do we want to be? We ask faith, civic and community leaders to speak clearly and publicly when entire groups are treated with suspicion. We ask all of us to challenge prejudice, stand beside targeted neighbors, and learn what is on the ballot and participate.

Do not allow fear or political rhetoric to determine what you believe or how you participate in your community. Our communities become stronger when we participate, not when we withdraw.
